Founded in the Swiss mountains of La Chaux de Fonds, this influential company would go on to gain an incredible amount of renown through its consistent efforts to recreate and redefine so many different varieties of wristwatches and watch mechanisms.However, this recognition didnt appear overnightThis story begins in 1895 when a small watch company in Switzerland registered trademarks for its new line of watches, watch parts, and packaging. Rumors had been flourishing around the country such as the companys creation as early as 1848 under the name of Meyer Freres. Did it really matter? Despite the rumors, this new manufacturer of watches had been growing for quite a while. Only by the tail end of the 19th century did the prestige of Picard & Cie cultivate and mature to the point that it could potentially become internationally known and some would say it was worth the wait.As with any manufacturing company, the turn of a new century can be either a boon or a bust, especially for one that creates a product based upon the calculation of time. And yet, to practically no ones surprise, Picard & Cie managed to weather the change effortlessly. In truth, the turn of the 20th century became a true wind of change when the company took two other failing watch manufacturers under its wing including many of their trademarks and designs. And so Picard & Cie continued forward with its head held high and its brand name fortified to an even higher level. After the merger of new trademarks and designs, Picard & Cie set forth with an updated image and brand. By 1915, the company, now known as Fabrique Germinal - Picard & Cie began a campaign producing advertisements that claimed the creation of The Most Advantageous of Repeating Watches. In fact by this point, the company was producing and selling all sorts of innovative timepieces including some of the first wristwatches, ultra-flat pocket watches, and chronographs.Also true pioneers of sports watches in the early 20th century, Picard & Cie created a great deal of specialty timepieces for its driver, aviator, engineer, and doctor consumers. As time continued to press on, the ambition to advance the technology of timekeeping only continued to expand. To quench this growing desire, the company introduced its own line of calendar watches, pocket chronometers, chronographs, and tachymeters. From 1918 on, Picard & Cie would continue to create innovative watch designs for men and women alike. As with many tales in this day and age, this story doesnt have a happy ending. Eventually watch manufacturers from Switzerland and Japan, among others, were also providing breakthrough advances in watch technology. As it had merged other companies into itself so many years before, Picard & Cie was forced by the mid 1960s to merge with other watch companies in order to survive. However, the name that so many had come to trust for decades was gone.Now we welcome a brand new tale in the saga and legacy of the Picard & Cie. A whole new century upon us, and with that the ever growing imagination that provides us with brand new advancements in wristwatch technology.
